Veli-Matti USKI

Veli-Matti Uski is the Director General of Climate and Environmental Protection Department of the Ministry of the Environment of Finland. The department is responsible for matters related to climate change, environmental protection in industry, air protection, promotion of the circular economy and waste management, prevention of environmental damage caused by chemicals, environmental impact assessment and sea issues, soil pollution, and prevention, aftercare and compensation of environmental damage.

Prior to the Ministry, Veli-Matti has worked as Director of the Environmental Permit Division at the Regional State Administrative Agency for Southern Finland in 2020-2024. He has previously held several positions at the Regional State Administrative Agency for Eastern Finland; in 2019, as environmental counsellor and Director of the Environmental Division, and in 2014-2019 as environmental lawyer and in 2017-2019 as Director of the Water Permit Unit. 

He has also worked at the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for North Karelia and North Savo and at the Regional State Administrative Agency for Western and Inland Finland. Veli-Matti holds a Master's degree in Administrative Sciences.
